Paric's Core Values - Corporate Rhetoric?

With the launch of our new website and 30th anniversary it seems appropriate to write about something that truly represents the spirit and character of the people at Paric - Our Core Values. We've all had experience with other organizations that hang posters on the wall touting their values or mission statements. While, this is done with the best of intentions and much belief at the time they're created, the day to day challenges of navigating through difficult times can compromise these values. While our core values are certainly put to the test, do they endure?
Recently, two of our summer interns made presentations before they headed back to school for Fall semester. As this is a typical process at Paric, their comments were interesting. Our interns worked at Paric during some of our most challenging economic times in our 30 year history. They were paired over the summer with engineers and managers that have been with us for a number of years and were exposed to several projects and many people both in the field and office. (Two of the engineers, or intern advocates were also interns with us several years ago.) Among their presentation remarks both interns commented that when they were "recruited" they heard us speak about our core values. They assumed it was more "corporate rhetoric" as all the companies they spoke with had similar spiels. "It's not just rhetoric" they both said with a certain element of surprise. "Paric really does live their core values!" as they provided examples to support their claim. Their summer experience is a true complement to the people at Paric that influenced their internships.
"Enhancing our Community" - a value that we often refer to. It was a bit surprising to learn the following stats: Twenty-six of our employees have volunteered and touched over 100 local organizations over the last five years. Over 22,000 volunteer hours were supplied. Doing the quick math, at an average salary of $50,000 per year, these folks have contributed what would equate to a $500,000 community investment. Wow!
It's not to say that our values aren't put to the test. They are, every day. What keeps me going is that when we're tested, someone in the room will always say, "that's not consistent with our values" and the appropriate decision is made. Through layoffs, warranty issues, subcontractor relationships, it doesn't change. So, I say "yes", when put to the test, our core values do endure. How refreshing!
