Construction and Suicide Prevention – Advancing the Conversation

According to the CDC, the construction industry has the second-highest rate of suicide in the U.S. During the month of September, construction professionals dedicate this time to National Suicide Prevention Month, when the industry unites to raise awareness about suicide prevention, provide life-saving resources and combat the stigma surrounding suicide.

Since the construction industry faces higher suicide rates than any other industry, making this conversation is more important than ever. During Suicide Prevention Month, teams on PARIC’s active project sites stopped work to participate in stand downs focused on mental health and suicide prevention. Partnering with OSHA, our teams came together to talk openly about risk factors, share experiences and distribute resources, including 988 cards for the National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, to reinforce that support is only a call or text away.

Our teams and trade partners also participated in toolbox talks to recognize warning signs, support suicide prevention, look out for one another and encourage help-seeking behaviors. These moments reflect our core value, Power of One Team, that no one is ever alone.

Outside of work, our PARIC people came together to take part in the Out of Darkness Walk, joining thousands across the community to honor those affected by suicide, and to help raise awareness and funds for prevention efforts.

PARIC’s ongoing commitment to protecting the well-being of every worker – both on and off the job site – extends far beyond September. We continue to foster a culture of awareness, support, compassion and open conversation about mental health.

Start Building Your Future: PARIC’s Internship Program

CAREER DEVELOPMENT

PARIC’s summer internship program is built to provide undergraduate college students with hands-on experience and the framework to shape a successful career. For 11 weeks, students are paired with mentors and work side-by-side to learn the fundamentals of the construction industry. While working directly with project management, field operations and support departments, interns have the opportunity to support day-to-day operations throughout all stages of active construction projects.

Students are presented with the unique opportunity to experience various aspects of the construction process – from conception to completion – through a variety of jobsite tours throughout the program.

CULTURE

The road to success begins with PARIC’s core values. These core values are the core principles that bind our team together. In this spirit, all interns have the opportunity to participate in a community outreach project to fully experience life at PARIC.

In addition to on-site job training and community outreach, interns will learn the value of PARIC’s culture through team building activities. Our team building activities are designed to develop supportive partnerships and cross-functional collaboration. These carefully curated activities encourage creativity and innovation that will aid in the development of their careers.

The goal of PARIC’s internship program is to help build the foundation of one’s career by providing interns with the tools needed to be successful. Through firsthand jobsite experience and cultural immersion, PARIC strives to develop the next generation of industry leaders.

Enhancing Our Community

Throughout the summer, PARIC team members participated in a variety of events to give back to the communities in which we live and work. We’re proud to share we’ve raised more than $30,000 and volunteered nearly 300 hours supporting KIDstruction, the International Institute of St. LouisSleep in Heavenly Peace and Pedal the Cause. We support and encourage our teams to look for ways they can make a difference and look forward to continuing this mission as we head into 2023.

PARIC Named OSHA VPP Star Mobile Workforce Participant

As a contractor that prioritizes safety above all else, PARIC is proud to announce we have once again been named a Star Mobile Workforce participant in OSHA’s Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP). PARIC is one of only four builders in our four-state region to earn this designation. Bravo to the #PARICpeople working to ensure everyone goes home safe.

The Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) recognize employers and workers in the private industry and federal agencies who have implemented effective safety and health management systems and maintain injury and illness rates below national Bureau of Labor Statistics averages for their respective industries. In VPP, management, labor, and OSHA work cooperatively and proactively to prevent fatalities, injuries, and illnesses through a system focused on: hazard prevention and control; worksite analysis; training; and management commitment and worker involvement. To participate, employers must submit an application to OSHA and undergo a rigorous onsite evaluation by a team of safety and health professionals. Union support is required for applicants represented by a bargaining unit. VPP participants are re-evaluated every three to five years to remain in the programs. VPP participants are exempt from OSHA programmed inspections while they maintain their VPP status.
